How to choose beautifully unique birdhouses for your outdoor space: 5 things you need to know

Updated: Sep 26

With their graceful flight and captivating melodies, birds bring life and vibrancy to our surroundings. If you want to attract these enchanting, feathered friends to your outdoor sanctuary, creating a cozy haven for their offspring is an inviting and positive gesture. But how do birds choose beautifully unique birdhouses for their little ones? Here are five fascinating facts that unveil their selection process.

1. Size Matters!

Birds are meticulous in choosing the perfect-sized birdhouse for their families. Each species has unique space requirements to ensure their chicks have ample room to grow and flourish. When selecting a birdhouse, it's important to consider the types of birds in your area to provide a comfortable living space that meets their specific needs.

2. Location, Location, Location!

Just as in real estate, location is crucial when it comes to birdhouses. Birds are very particular about where they nest, selecting spots that provide natural protection from predators and the elements. A shaded area is preferred to ensure optimal conditions for their nestlings to thrive. By strategically placing birdhouses in quiet, sheltered areas with easy access to food and water, you can create an irresistible haven for bird families in your outdoor space. If birds cannot find enough food and water nearby, they won't nest in birdhouses that don't provide these necessities.

The placement of the birdhouse will determine which species will use it. For example, birdhouses hung near water are more likely to attract tree swallows, whereas house wrens will use those in gardens. Eastern bluebirds prefer to nest on the edge of open fields, while chickadees like wooded areas.

Martins nest in colonies, so their birdhouses are very different and more complex - they're almost like a mini neighborhood! Depending on how many you want to attract, you must build them with multiple levels. These birdhouses feature a protective roof as well.

3. Entrance Matters Too

Attention to detail is important when creating an inviting birdhouse for nesting birds, especially concerning the entrance size. This detail plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of our feathered friends. The entrance should be carefully designed to allow easy access for adult birds while effectively keeping out unwanted predators such as squirrels, snakes, and larger birds. We can construct a safe and appealing shelter for nesting birds when the entrance size is designed accordingly.

4. Ventilation and Drainage are Key

Birds exhibit a high level of attentiveness to various details, particularly regarding ventilation and drainage. Adequate ventilation is essential to maintain the optimal temperature within the birdhouse, creating a comfortable environment for the nestlings. Equally crucial, the presence of drainage holes prevents the accumulation of water during periods of precipitation. During the construction of the birdhouse, prioritizing efficient airflow and drainage is necessary to provide an ideal environment for our feathered residents.

5. Material Matters

When choosing a birdhouse, opt for natural materials like wood, which provide insulation and a cozy environment for growing chicks. Avoid using treated wood or materials that may contain harmful chemicals. By selecting birdhouses made from bird-friendly materials, you can attract an array of bird species to your outdoor sanctuary.

Birds are particular about the materials used in their nest construction. The best woods to build birdhouses are cedar, pine, and poplar. These woods are durable, weather-resistant, and provide a natural and attractive habitat for our feathered friends.

Coating your birdhouse is essential for protection and longevity against the elements. The preferred coating materials are marine or spar varnish on unpainted surfaces or oil-based exterior paint. Cedar birdhouses do not need to be coated, however, they will turn grey if exposed to the elements without shading.

Please Note:

  1. Never coat the inside of the birdhouse. This is lethal for nestlings.

  2. Never use plywood or composite wood to construct your birdhouse if you care about the longevity of your masterpiece. It will fall apart.

  3. Never use pressure-treated wood. This material is treated with chemicals that are lethal to your feathered friends.

Adult birds gather materials to build a cozy nest for their babies. In my experience, parent birds prefer using dog hair, which is soft and comfy, to line the nest for their young ones. They choose dog hair for a couple of reasons: it provides a comfortable surface for the babies to rest on, and it has a natural scent that helps keep predators away. Place the dog hair in an area easily accessible to the birds.

In conclusion, birds show remarkable thought and care when choosing the perfect birdhouse for their chicks. By understanding their preferences and needs, you can create an inviting sanctuary that attracts a variety of bird species to your outdoor area. This will warmly welcome your favorite outdoor tenants by selecting the ideal birdhouse customized to their specific requirements.

By following these five key considerations – size, location, entrance, ventilation, and material – you can create a bird-friendly environment that will delight you and your favorite visitors. Happy birdwatching!

Creating a secure and comfortable habitat for birds can enhance your outdoor environment, promote a peaceful atmosphere, improve your overall well-being, and contribute to the conservation of these magnificent creatures.
